I can't remember where I found this recipe but I've been doing it for at least 10 years. It's quick to put together in the morning and quick to finish whenever you're ready for supper.

Ingredients:

Pork shoulder, as large or small as you want
2 lt. root beer soda, you don't need to go expensive unless you plan to finish the bottle
Your favorite barbeque sauce

Equipment:

Crockpot
Colander / strainer
2 Forks for pulling or gloves if you prefer to hand pull (I'm a bit of safe food handling freak)

That's it. 3 ingredients and 4 pieces of equipment. How can you go wrong?

Directions:

Put the pork shoulder in the crockpot and cover with root beer soda.
Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4-6. I prefer to cook it on low for 8 or so hours.

Drain crockpot and set pork aside for a moment.
Thoroughly rinse crockpot and return to the heating element
Pull pork, returning it to the warm crockpot
Add sauce, as much or as little as you like.
Serve as you like!

I have never eaten pulled pork.
I hadn't really liked any of the pulled pork I'd tried until I found this recipe. Most commercial or restaurant pulled pork is drowning in bbq sauce, which I really don't like. This way I can put as much or as little in the base pulled pork and add more if I want once it's plated.

--------Wait a minute.... You live in Texas and haven't had pulled pork??? Are you trying to have your Texas Citizenship revoked???

I've only really known about Texas BBQ and for as long as I can remember, pulled pork was not a thing around here.

Always thought of Texas as beef country BUT apparently it's both beef & pork. One opinion:

NOT to hijack this thread BUT an excellent alternative to root beer is Dr Pepper. I"ve had that version and it's excellent

Pulled pork is definitely a thing in Texas now! But it wasn't for a long, long time. I want to say maybe within the past decade or two (probably two); it started showing up. I blame it on Cable TV and the Food Network.

But for me, it's just not something I'm interested in.

Another thing that has shown up is when you get the bread to go with your BBQ plate; they ask if you want white or wheat. SACRELIGIOUS! You only eat white bread with BBQ. Which, funnily enough, is the only time I eat white bread. :sneaky:

We watched an episode of Pioneer Woman with her Soda Pulled Pork. She used Dr. Pepper. It was taped long before that recipe was posted on that website. PW said any soda would work.

@KitchenWench That episode was taped 8/10 years ago.
