Reading several forums yes they have gone up. Something alleged to do with a shortage  of layers or something depends on the forum you read. I'm still getting store coupons for free or $1/dz eggs. Several years ago the same coupon thing was happening. I ended up with 9 dozen in the frig. I dehydrated 8 dozen to be used for baking. We don't eat many eggs otherwise.

Eggs have gone up dramatically because several million layers were destroyed this year because of some bird flu infestation. It has happened twice this year. I though double the price was bad. At $6 a dozen I would do without.

We had been buying our eggs at Sam’s after my neighbor/probably a cousin/local egg supplier, divorced his wife and took the chickens with him. Then Sam’s prices started going up, and now we're back to buying them at our HEB grocery store. Just paid $13 for 30 eggs.

It's insane. All grocery prices are insane.

HEB used to claim they were cheaper than Kroger. We shopped at HEB for a while but I noticed that we spent more money there so back to Kroger. Now we do Food Town and Kroger. Kroger is generally better on produce but FT has some things we like that Kroger doesn't. You just got to know your stores and prices.

There is a Brookshire Brothers up at the lake, and we keep an eye on their weekly flyer, but it's a bit of a trek, and with the population explosion around here, it's hit or miss as to whether you can get what's been advertised. We used to have an Albertson's, and we always comparison-shopped between the two, but they closed down a LONG time ago. No one else wants to move into our town, and I recently read an article somewhere saying that it's because no one thinks they can compete with HEB.

Whenever I get to ATX or SAT, I do like to go prowl around Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. More recently, I was able to make a stop at Wheatville Coop. That was a lot of fun. None of those are less expensive by any means, but they have some of the more uncommon goods.

$6 a dozen?!? Yikes!! I can get farm fresh eggs for $3 a dozen or less if I bring my cartons back. There were a couple of months during the summer when I was getting them free because I brought back a couple of dozen cartons.

If I have to get store bought eggs I try to get them at Aldi for a few reasons. They're about $2.50 a doz., come in cardboard cartons that I recycle into seed starter trays and because of the high rate of sales I find the eggs are fresher.

I don't know what my problem is - Aldi is the nearest grocery to the house by a big margin and in more than seven years living here I have yet to set foot in it; somehow it never occurs to go there when I'm planning a grocery run.

They will never be your only grocery as their meat department is a bit weak but for staples, dairy, produce and canned goods they beat the big boys most of the time. Most but not all of the house branded items are equal to or better than the name brands. The special find limited time food items are almost always a bargain. By buying from the preceding list I estimate I save about 30% all day every day. Their daily prices are the same as when the big boys have a hot sale.

We haven't been to Aldi in several years, used to stop in after the grocery run. Now when we go there it's for a large quantity of and item but not always. Baking supplies are/were cheaper, canned goods, meh a little cheaper and I would buy multiple flats of several product. When I'm canning I might want a large quantity of some ingredient and can save some coin there. Walmart is closer that either Aldi in my area so it's a special trip unless going down that road for another reason.

Give them a chance. I prefer their chicken over most other stores and the bargans you can grab are fantastic. If you're a fan of plain bagels, theirs is the best around unless you live close enough to NYC or a former NYC resident's bakery to pick 'em up fresh there. The specialty brand seasonal soups are always good but I don't know anything about their canned veg. We buy frozen and haven't been disappointed. The selection is good and they've got different blends from other stores.

I will caution you about the fresh fruit and veg...it's not always the best quality and you usually can't buy just 1 or 2 of something. The veg is usually prepackaged so you have to be careful to only buy as much as you're going to use in a day or two.

Got a new batch of Kroger store coupons. The ones they send to customers that make repeated purchases of an item. Keep in mind I've only bought 1 dozen eggs there but this is the 4th time I've gotten a coupon for free large/ex large eggs. I have 6 dozen in the frig now, soon to be 7 dz.

Sounds like it's time to make omelets and french toast!
