Growing up, we always had to have black-eyed peas with our New Year's meal, and the full meal was usually black-eyed peas with ham, collard greens and cornbread; it was supposed to bring us good luck. In Mexico, it's tamales; in Japan, it's Soba noodles; and in Spain, you have twelve grapes.

Do you have any New Year's food traditions?

We always had black eyed peas also but I'm not much of a fan of them. This year I wondered about putting sugar in them. It only took a minute or so to come up with this recipe that I'll make. I'll need to leave the jalapenos out of it otherwise wife won't eat it.

My mother somehow got into doing a seafood feast about 10-12 years ago. She has absolutely no idea how to cook a shrimp, crab, or lobster but she buys at least 2 of the 3 for New Year. I've tried to tell her but you can't teach her anything.

I've cooked shrimp and crab lots but after watching some cooking shows I see I've been over cooking them. Now with shrimp I drop them in a boiling brine for 2 to 3 minutes then cool them to stop the cooking. They are better.

I always make lentil soup with sliced frankfurters ( sliced into pennies)
lentil is a good luck money soup, if you have lentils on New Year’s Day, you’ll
have money for the rest of the year…pickled herring is another must on New Year’s Day.

I think we started one this year - visit an ethnic market (this year it was a Russian/eastern European market) and pick up what looks good for grazing.

Black caviar only requires a wooden or horn spoon in my corner of the world

I have tracked down a really good fishmonger less than 25 miles away, so regardless of what the family thinks, I'm going to be adding fresh fish to my menu. They can go out to eat or go hungry. I care not...lol
