Before we started streaming content we had cable and could get the Food Network on cable or Dish whatever we had. I liked to watch anything Geoffrey Zakarian did, most of the "Sandwich King" stuff, Emeril Lagasse and others I don't remember. Now that we stream almost everything FN is a subscription app for us. Probably never happen. HULU does have a few of the shows but none of my favorites.

We added DIscovery+ to our primary streaming service (SlingTV). DIscovery+ carries all of the Food Network and Cooking Channel shows I like.
I'll look into that. Cost compare favorably to HULU. Thanks Old Gnome.

Good eats was a favorite of mine. When the grandkids were little at Christmas I'd make Alton Brown's marshmallow recipe for them.
Good Eats on DVD? WooHoo.

I rarely stream anything. I do stream Thursday Night Football. We watch Directv. If Sunday football goes to a streaming platform next year I will have to use it. For now I use NFL Sunday Ticket.
I started with the Galloping Gourmet, the Frugal Gourmet, Julia Child's. I record most every cooking show I like. I watch every cooking show on PBS. Milk Street is good and the other shows.
When I was a kid I watched those old shows and its one big reason I love to cook to this day.

Alton will tell you he's a cook, not a chef. That said, I saw a video he did about the knives in his kitchen and I looked them up afterward: $350 - $750 was the range for the few he showed. I guess I'm not even a cook.
You can, but you don't have to spend that much for good knives. We have an 8" JA Henckels Chef's knife that was probably $140 when we bought it about 30 years ago. The rest of our knives combined didn't cost that much. I still use a couple of knives that came with a set from Fingerhut in about 1980.

Mr. Brown probably spends a good deal more of his time with a knife in his hands than I do, so he can justify high-dollar knives.

My best friend is a professional knife sharpener and I'm not a bad amateur so I've always figured I likely at least have a decent edge on my knives. That said, I have gotten a little more snobby about them in recent years and got rid of some of the ones bought back when I was more youthful.

I'm a butcher by trade. The last store I worked at did free knife sharpening. Customers would come in with blades that, frankly, I was not sure how they been THAT abused. My boss Donald and I both put in a sharpening effort commensurate with the maintenance effort the customer put into the knife. You show up with some half rusted, nicked up hunk of junk and you get about 2 passes on the grinder. Just enough to work out the nicks.

For worst Food Network shows I'd have to go with Worse Cooks in America. We just started watching it again after quite a few years. We've watched one episode but we will watch no more.

I completely agree. If those "contestants" actually cooked like that, they would have starved to death years ago. Most of their "best dishes" seem to be made up just to get the attention of those casting the show.

You don't have to spend that much to have excellent knives at your disposal.

I have assorted hand picked knives made by Henckels. All of them exceed 30 years old. 10' and 8' chefs knives. And one thats like a chefs knife but much thinner with little hand clearance. Its also 8". Two paring knives. One real short and the other about 4-5 inches long. And a small bread knife. I use every single one of those knives. I use a multiple knives each day I'm cooking and I cook most every day. So I do need them.
I did get a Henckels cleaver as a gift years ago as well. I hate it and I cannot seem to get a good edge on it. Its very thick at the edge and its very heavy. I thinks its for hacking through big bones? Not sure. But I know that knife cost considerable money. But it sits. I wish I could find someone to buy it.

I use my "Chefs Choice" three stage sharpener about once a year and use a steel every time I pull out a knife. They are always extra sharp and no tomato has a chance.

Have you ever tried a diamond rasp? The look like emery boards for the jolly green gaint.
I have no interest in the cleaver at all. To heavy and to thick. I would prefer a Chinese cleaver that serves the purpose of chopping as well as other duties a knife would have.
Since I have all the knives I need there is really no place for it here in my kitchen.

WooHoo again. I finally managed to get hooked up with Discovery+ and found the shows I wanted. It was a cluster doing it. Had to register on the TV website then on Discovery+ but I didn't know that previously and got no messages telling me that.
